Dr. Portia Malatjie

Dr Portia Malatjie is a curator and Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Town, holding a PhD in Visual Cultures from Goldsmiths, University of London. She has served as Adjunct Curator of Africa and African Diaspora at Tate Modern, and at Norval Foundation (Cape Town), and was Head Curator of Brundyn+ Gallery, Director of AVA Gallery, and curator at Tiwani Contemporary, London. Her exhibitions include When Rain Clouds Gather: Black South African Women Artists, 1940–2000 (2022) and Ecologies of Elsewhere (2023). She curated the South African Pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale (Quiet Ground) and explores Blackness through sound, spirituality, ecologies, and Black feminism.
